Part 1: Pivoting in Uncertain Times – Entertainer to Confidence Coach with Kevin Ly

Are you looking into pivoting in uncertain times when it comes to your business? Recently I was invited for an interview with Kevin Ly, founder of Beyond Meditations and KEPLY Business Course. In this interview, we go around how I ended up becoming a confidence coach on my journey towards becoming an entertainer. So, this is my story.

Kevin:  I just wanted to hear a bit more about your story. Tell us about how you went from stage to film to YouTube then to Livestream?

Michelle: Yes sure. So, my name's Michelle Osorio and ultimately I identify myself as an entertainer and storyteller. From a young age, I loved to draw, I loved to tell stories, and eventually, after watching the Little Mermaid, my friends all told me I could sing like the little mermaid and that's when the idea was born.

I did choir, majored in musical theater. I knew for sure that I just love to entertain people, make them smile and laugh. But I didn't realize at the time that it was about connection. I just lived to connect with people.

So when I grew up, it was no surprise that I fell into filmmaking. I loved the stage but it made me very nervous and I didn't like going out there. I was afraid people will judge me and so I had terrible stage fright. It won't be wrong to say that even though I did it for many years, my stage fright persisted. So, eventually, I felt much more comfortable behind the camera.

I went to film school, did the film festival circuit, and then being the nerd that I am, got into tech and started doing videos for tech companies that led to eventually getting into YouTube. The journey continues, I started making several shows that went viral and had lots of from fans around the world.

Then, finally, I got into live streaming because that was the next big techie thing. So, your tech geek Michelle wanted to find new ways to connect with people. Surprisingly, I was able to grow a large audience in live streaming. I have 136,000 live stream followers as of 2020. I entertain mostly but It's hard to believe I grew that many followers just within a couple of years.

Eventually, the prevailing theme is no matter what platform I went to, it was really just about connecting with people and giving them, I used to say, a moving experience. But I would say now it's probably more of a transformational experience; whether that's helping people through depression, or just cheering them up on a tough day with some music, or just talking to them.

The inception of Dare to Dream School

So in the last year and a half, I've evolved to the next level which is, I founded Dare To Dream School so that I could help other people. I was getting a lot of other entrepreneurs, musicians, artists, or even just people who ran regular businesses, who just wanted to know how do you do it?

How do you gain an audience?

Or how do you get fans?

How do you get people to resonate with you?

I want to start a YouTube channel, how to do that? Or should I start a live stream?

So it kind of happened organically that Dare To Dream School was born. This is where I started helping people feel confident that they could dare to say they deserved to be on camera, build a movement, build a community, and that it's not a ridiculous desire to put themselves out there. So that's what I did.

I've been teaching a course helping people conquer video and helping people with mindset. I thought I was just going to teach about tech, but it turns out it was more about helping people understand, ‘Yes I deserve to be on camera, I deserve to send my message out there.' So that's what I've been doing for a while now, in addition to all the creative stuff, helping other people put themselves out on the internet and grow their audience.

Kevin: Wow! That's so much there. I mean your journey from developing emotionally, connecting with your audience, and then finding out what it is that drives you. Going from there to continually build, compound, and grow that into what it is today. And I love that title Dare To Dream School, I love that.

Michelle: It took me a long time to come up with that. I sometimes wondered for a time, is that too cheesy? Is that too aspirational?

Kevin: Not at all, it's kickass.

That's it for part 1 of my interview with Kevin Ly. There is more coming your way. In part 2 of the interview, we address a question everyone is into these days. There's a massive disruption going on at this moment because of COVID19. So in that regard, what is my strategy or new business model that adapts to the current situation? Keep in the loop to find out.
